The village known with the name of Gökabad in 1945, was the first settlement located in the valley and it formed a basis for the settled life of the yörüks. Within Gökova Valley, Gökçe, Akçapınar, Şirinköy, Çıtlık, Ataköy, Yeşilova Villages, Gökova and Akyaka Municipalities are constituted; in 1968 Gökabag Village was left and became Akyaka Village Mukhtar, in 1980 thanks to the interest of Nail ÇAKIRHAN and his friends the village became focus for the tourists and the village became Akyaka Municipality in 1992.
With the development of tourism, Muğla and Ula has adopted architecture modernization.

Gökova Municipality:
Gökova Municipality was a village and was governed by a mukhtar until the last local election in 1999; moreover its population was 2200. Since 1998 November, with the decree of cabinet, the village has been a municipality. Before, in 1940s due to the epidemic diseases the locals went away from the coast.
Today, age old eucalyptus trees which are unique in the country, with their appearance such as natural tree tunnel make the old way and the vicinity magnificient.
Gökova Municipality has significant agricultural potential with its fertile lands and rivers. It is not directly dependent on the coast so it is within the borders of the Project study area.
Akçapınar Village:
Akçapınar village is 2 km inside from the sea. It is located in the skirts of yellow pine forests in Aegean region. The fundamental source of income is agriculture and animal breeding. Akçapınar Backwater reaching to Gökova Bay passes through this village and takes its name from the village.
Gökçe Village:
It is 1,5 km away from the Akçapınar village, Ferek River passess through the village and reachs to Akçapınar Backwater. Fertile Gökova lands extend from Akçapınar village to Gökçe village.
Çamlı Village:
Away from 1,5 km off the coast, Çamlı River passess through the village and from the delta when it reachs to the sea, wetlands and holophilous marshes are formed. Within the borders of SEPA, it is one of the rare settlements which shows agricultural mosaics. It is located within the official border of Marmaris.
Taşbükü Village:
It is one of the settlements where secondary settlements are built and it is located on the western parts of Gökova Bay and it has 500 meters of coast line. It is located within the official border of Marmaris.
Karaca Village:
It is located on the western part of the bay. The village is mostly preffered by daily excursion boats and yacht owners. Behind the settlements, there are agricultural lands. It is one of the important locations in Gökova. It is within the borders of Marmaris. ilocated on the western part of the bay. The village is mostly preffered by daily excursi nt locations in Gökova. The altitute is 250 m. And the population is relatively scarce. It is officially dependent on Marmaris.
Alatepe Village:
Located on the northwestern borders of the Gökova SEPA. the connection with coast is cut by the sheer slopes therefore the fundamental income is agriculture and animal breeding. İt is within the official border of Milas.
Kultak Village:
Located on the 3 km eastern of the Alatepe village; it is surrounded by high hill sides. The altitute is 315 m. It is within the official border of Milas.
Gökova Bay is composed of Datça, Marmaris, Ula, Milas and Muğla Municipalities officially.
